Today marks the 115th birthday of the beautiful and brave aviatrix Amelia Earhart who became the first U.S. woman to fly across the Atlantic, but went missing 75 years ago after her plane vanished over the Pacific Ocean. This reminded me of Ralph Lauren‘s oversized limited-edition coffee table book, Diary of a Collection, that started my now ever-growing fashion library. “I was inspired by the glamorous aviator,” the designer admits to Earhart’s influence on the Ralph Lauren Fall 2005 Collection. It is probably one of my favourite Ralph Lauren collections to date and like Ralph himself, I too love the contrast of luxury and utility that is embodied in this retro-modern collection. The aviation style is timeless and can include a shearling jacket, oversized sunglasses, weekend boots and a fashionable scarf.
